Ancora McCarthy / More about McCarthy

Cormac McCarthy, Blood Meridian or The Evening Redness in the West, Random House, New York 1985 (immagine dal link)

Cormac McCarthy, All the Pretty Horses, Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1992 (immagine dal link)

Cormac McCarthy is, obviously, very beloved also in America. So he couldn't be missing in the Ellis's book about which I wrote last week (vedi post). In fact he quotes him very often.
What I've learned from this book is that the prices of McCarthy's editions are largely higher than the ones by very famous XIX century writers, like the author of Lady Chatterley's Lover D.H. Lawrence.
Or I've also learned that a book like All the Pretty Horses that came out in America in 1992, in just over a year went from 20 dollars on the shelves of the new stores to over 200 in antiquarian catalogues. So Ellis is suggesting us to always buy successful books in first editions, in case their price will grow.
Or also that McCarthy was an author who tended not to sign his edition on official occasion, so he provoked an increase of the prices of his signed book.

The occasion to write about this extraordinary book collection came thanks to this Rex Stout's rarity for sale on Ebay right these days, having many bids.
During 60s/70s and 90s the Omnibus Mondadori dedicated to crime and science fiction books was kind of a miracle: quality paper, luxurious and coloured bindings and avant-garde spines.
All volumes had the image pasted on the front and very large titles. There were often firsts or unique italian editions.
Indeed, today they're very sought-after by collectors, who are maintaining their valuations always high.
To give an example, the most uncommon editions are, say, In viaggio con Poirot by Agatha Christie (1991) or some books of the Philo Vance's adventures written by S.S. Van Dine (for ex. Altre avventure di Philo Vance, 1992). Or also collections by Georges Simenon and Carter Dickson.
But the list is long! If you want to know more look at the link.

A new Charles Saatchi's book

Charles Saatchi, The naked eye, Booth-Clibborn Editions, London 2013 (immagine dal link)

The new Charles Saatchi's book, the renowned publicist but especially gallerist, has come out: The Naked Eye.
Artist's photos absolutely "unphotoshopped", as are described in the online shop of the French Colette. Extraordinary but without corrections, taken in particular and unexpected moments.
So the gallerist is continuing his hard trip in promoting emergent artists, by now with a huge success.
The price is quite modest: 29 euros.

Cosa sta succedendo a Stephen King? / What's happening to Stephen King?

Stephen King, A volte ritornano.

Stephen King, Doctor Sleep. A novel, Scribner's, New York 2013 (immagine dal link)

Chissà come sarà quella italiana?

A book that you usually find at 20-30 euros quite easily now is reaching 150 on Ebay at eight days left. And the same is happening with some others first editions which, ok, are sought after but not rare.
What's happening to Stephen King's italian market?
Is it a matter of some marketing operation, now that also in Italy is going to be published the Shining's sequel called Doctor Sleep? Or it's just a revival of this beloved and highly collected author? (in relation to that I remember my two old post1, 2)
We'll see if these prices will last.
In the meantime we can enjoy the USA Doctor Sleep cover, very interesting and well made. How is going to be the italian one?
Moreover, some weeks ago, in this month's Arte issue I red about the new Kenzo advertising, realized by Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari. Surprisingly it reminds the italian A volte ritornano edition. A quotation o just a case?

Le prime edizioni BEAT / The first BEAT's editions

Buona caccia!

Here we are at the first appointment with rare italian Beat editions!
For it's a vast and complex argument, it will continue in the next weeks and each time it will be enriched with news and curiosities.
The Beat literature date of birth is fixed at 1957, when Jack Kerouac's On the road book came out (I previously mentioned it in a post). This book had all the characteristics and, If you want, all the clichés of the movement: a desire to be free, to break all the bourgeois rules and a generation crisis with the consequent individualism. In a word: XIXth century bohème.
As Vito Amoruso underlines, the author of a very useful text if you need a general idea of the movement: La letteratura beat americana (Laterza 1969), it was more a lifestyle mood, related to society from which the writers wanted to escape. Indeed the firsts who payed attention to them were psychologists, then television and the media.
For those who want to go deep into the topic the books by Fernanda Pivano are a must, for example C'era una volta un beat: 10 anni di ricerca alternativa, (Arcana, Roma 1976, reprinted a couple of times). And I want to start right from this text, using it as a data base for lot of bibliographical and historical informations. The power of this text (I have this Frassinelli edition) are the numerous unreleased photos owned by the author, which make the reading of the book also very pleasant.
Pivano had a glorious merit of introducing Beats in Italy in 60s, fighting against censures,  prejudices and general skepticism in these writers. She personally went to know them and become their good friend.
She also translated and publish - as a middle-person between authors and editors - a long series of unreleased books and also a precious anthology called Poesia degli ultimi americani, now sold for 30-40 euros.
Inside she put a flyer with the famous visual poem by Gregory Corso, Bomb, a first real manifest inspired by the atomic bomb threat. Usually it's missing, so if it has it it's worth more than the usual price.
Gregory Corso's italian bibliography is very scarce, starting from his beautiful Benzina, published by Guanda in 1969. This small book sometimes reaches 60 euros on auctions.
Another rarity is In quest'epoca inceppata, printed by the unknown Zero in 1988 and actually very difficult to find...
Have a good hunt!

Investments

One day, I'm sure, it will be worth as a book about Picasso.
Tracey Emin is one of the foundamental members of the artists' group called Young British Artists, promoted by the english gallerist Charles Saatchi in 1992.
This is one of her texts, available for a few dozen of euros without a dedication and about 50-70 with it.

Manuali per bibliofili parte 2 / Bibliophile's guides part 2

Ian C. Ellis, Book Finds. How to Find, Buy and Sell Rare Books, A Perigee Book, New York 2001 (immagine dal link)

William Lee [William Burroughs], Junkie. Confessions of an Unredeemed Drug Addict, Ace, New York 1953 (immagine dal link)

Interessante che Ellis ci segnali nel dettaglio queste curiosità, riportandoci nel caso di Cold Mountain la particolarità della prima edizione che conteneva: "she can go about looking like a man-woman" nella prima ristampa del libro e "she can go about looking like a mad woman" nelle successive edizioni (Ian C. Ellis, Book Finds... p.50).

Charles Frazier, Cold Mountain, Atlantic Monthly Press, New York 1997 (immagine dal link)

"[...] pay attention to every detail of the book in your hand. Do you know the date coding for Where the Wild Things Are? Knowing that bought me a vacation in Europe."(p.51)
Come non amarlo?

Recalling the question of the last post about bibliophile's or book scouts' manuals and continuing with the intention to give you news from book collecting in America, I'm suggesting this book I'm reading these days: Book finds by the antiquarian Ian Ellis.
The first edition is by 1996, but I've preferred to check the revised 2001 one, which includes also some cases related to Internet. Soon I will read also the 2006 edition, when the online book collecting era had become important and relevant as it's now.
Book Finds is a guide for book scouts, typically American in its schematism and classifying way of treating topics, and it divides in sections that goes from the physical description of the book object to valuations, cases when there are signed editions and much more. All enriched by precious and funny examples about book collecting, obviously for what concerns 90 century books in english language.
I have to admit that I literally lost myself fantasizing about first editions like Junkie of the Beat writer William Burroughs, which is mentioned in the book because it's related to the case of the "famous expections" of luxurious paperback editions, which are usually worth less than nothing (in this case where are talking about thousands of euros). The pseudonym Burroughs used could easily confuse a less expert book scout.
Or also about Charles Frazier's Cold Mountain (which inspired the famous movie with Nicole Kidman), which is connected with the case of the "famous mistakes" that make an edition a true firts state and which help the book scout to recognise it between later reprints. It seemed also interesting the way Ellis gave us detailed informations about the example he described, for example - in the case of Cold Mountain - quoting the particularity this first edition was containing: "she can go about looking like a man-woman" instead of "she can go about looking like a mad woman" in later reprints (Ian C. Ellis, Book Finds... p.50).
These cases are many and they would be worth a dedicated post.
Ellis's style is pleasant because it's concise, ironic and plenty of details. A little bit like our Simone Berni. And he also gives us a lot of suggestions, rules and warnings:
"[...] pay attention to every detail of the book in your hand. Do you know the date coding for Where the Wild Things Are? Knowing that bought me a vacation in Europe."(p.51)
How could I not love him?

I "libroni" d'arte / Huge art books

My professor always use to say: "They're beautiful but nobody reads them nor take them", referring to those huge and heavy books usually realized on the occasion of solo-exhibitions or historic recognitions of an artist's work.
Although they seem inviting for their images and inside, they are so big that we just leave them on the shelves when we find them. Some of these, moreover, although we're aspecting them to be valued, they're not. In fact every antiquarian book has its exact value.
In the case of art catalogs its price is given by his importance in art history terms. An example: there are lot of books about the venetian painter Paolo Veronese (1528-1588); essays, texts, studies, etc. but just a few of them are useful to understand his work and will be a must-have for a researcher.
In Veronese's case there are those written by the researcher Terisio Pignatti (for example this one, estimated at 200-300 euros), who since 70s has been carefully studied the work of this painter.
Indeed, the most valued art books are usually the ones written by eminent researchers of a certain artist or the ones that cover the entire corpus of his works.
So these will be the parameters to estimate a book like that, reminding that it's not determined by its weight...

Jack Matthews, Reading Matter. A rabid bibliophile's adventures among old and rare books, Oak Knoll Press, Delaware 2000

Hans Tuzzi, Collezionare libri.

Sometimes I like to buy some books about bibliophilia. Often they're banal or without sense, but sometimes I use to find interesting ones.
I remember reading the foundamental Hans Tuzzi's manual Collezionare libri, published by the "bibliophiliac" house Sylvestre Bonnard. I appreciated in particular the quality of the detailed informations about the world of book collecting, researched by the author with an unusual precision, irony and methodology.
And I would like to say the same for Jack Matthew's book, which disappointed me although I had many good expectations.
Matthews is a collector, writer and literary critic narrating in Reading Matter about his experiences in antiquarian libraries around the world. The style of the book is rambling and fakely ironic, and also the anecdotes are not curious.
Anyway I learned something, starting from the english terminology regarding bibliophilia, very useful when I have to translate my posts. Also interesting was the question of the "blurbs", kind of recommendations usually wrote by already famous writers on debut books' dust jackets (p.120).
An habitué of this activity was T.S. Eliot, but also André Gide on some debut Georges Simenon's novels. And than this is related with the importance of the dj as main part of a book...

Testi rari dalla narrativa gay: Edmund White / Rare books from gay authors: Edmund White

Stati del desiderio is a very honest, frank but also ironic portrait of the gay culture living in American town like San Francisco, where in 70s gay people were a majority, Los Angeles or Salt Lake City.
And it's just one of the many rare books of the talented American writer and essayist Edmund White, born in 1940 in Cincinnati (for his italian bibliography look the already mentioned beautiful website of Federico Novaro).
Although there were published by big houses like Einaudi,  Baldini & Castoldi or Guanda, White's books are quite rare or difficult to find.
Just to quote some examples, as well unfindable are E la bella stanza è vuota (Einaudi, 1992) or L'uomo sposato (Baldini & Castoldi, 2001). The first even mentioned by the blog La stamberga dei lettori as one of the books you just have to read at least once in a life.
Maybe due to ostracism or maybe because these books don't have a numerous public (in fact after the first state they never been published again), anyway they remain somewhat rarities.

Annotazioni su Il codice Da Vinci / Considerations about The Da Vinci Code

Dan Brown, Il Codice Da Vinci, Mondadori, Milano 2004 (6a edizione)

Last week I bought a reprint of the most known Dan Brown's book, Il Codice Da Vinci. In particular the sixth edition published by Mondadori a year after the first italian 2003 edition.
About this first edition I red in one of the precious manuals of the book hunter Simone Berni that was different from later reprintes because the image in the back of the dustjacket was showing the author sitting instead of standing. And this detail makes the book a little bit more valuated, although not so much.
But my edition has Dan Brown sitting too... as in the first state. Do you know more about?

A rare from the Russian novelist, poet and critic Andrej Belyj has been sold in these days on Ebay for more than 80 euros.
It's a work which overall had three italian editions: the first in 1961, the second in 1980 from Einaudi too, in the Nuovi Coralli collection, and a special third one illustrated by Reynald Schmid, published in Geneve by Edito Service in 1972.
All editions are translated and curated by the great connoisseur of the Boemian and Russian culture Angelo Maria Ripellino, about whom I wrote widely a while ago.
Pietroburgo is the Belyj's most quoted novel based on a dynamite attack by a young man against his bureaucrat father. The book was defined by Vladimir Nabokov as one of the best 90s books.

A successful collection and "only apparently made for child", as was announcing the introduction of these books of a magazine from 70s (Qui Touring, 1977).
Trapper Longanesi guides, published from 70s on, were teaching how to survive in extreme situations in wild nature, dedicating from each travel or activity an illustrated and good made volume.
Now these books are loved by collectors and valued quite weel.
The first to exit was Andrea Mercanti's 1976 book called Manuale del trapper. The author was a bolognese teacher with an adventurous spirit and in the guide he was teaching how to encamp, equip and travel prepaired in general. Usually this book sells for 40 euros.
After this book followed many of them, as for example the one I've proposed that teaches how to manipulate the iron. I can't find its valuation at the moment but I think it goes higher than 50 euros.
As well interesting is Un anno da trapper by John Rowlands (1977), not rare but quite sought after and well valuated. The author wrote about his adventures close to an old Indian leader, who teached him many surviving tips in the "great North".

Since a while I'm following the market of Cormac McCarthy's first italian editions, the American worldwide known author. Many of his books has been turned in movies, like for example the Coen's Questo non è un paese per vecchi, considered one of his best books.
The collecting of his italian firsts seems silent and shy but it does exist and it's quite unsuspected. I discovered it by a librarian from Rome (an occasional reader of my blog too), who has sold a copy of a first McCarthy's edition for 50 euros!
So I became curious and I started to research the case, finding out that ok, his first editions are not common. But they still remain books printed by a huge publishing house, mainly Einaudi, and moreover quite recently. So these books  are coming out with a discreet regularity.
However there is one curious thing: this American writer has been discovered (as happens oftenly - look Zafón, Ammaniti, Pennacchi, etc. etc. etc.) by a small press from Naples called Guida. They printed Cavalli selvaggi in 1993 with an admirable advance.
Than, two years after, Einaudi decided to buy royalties and make his books bestsellers, with an enormous number of reprints and pocket editions. After each first edition, in the beautiful Supercoralli collection with the light blue cover (the Einaudi's distinctive mark) and illustrated dust jacket followed the pocket edition in white cover. So the interest in these editions is not given by their rarity.
In chronological order went out: Oltre il confine (1995), Cavalli selvaggi e Meridiano di sangue (1996), Il buio fuori (1997) and Città della pianura (1999).
Currently all five books are difficult to find and curiously the Guida edition of Cavalli selvaggi doesn't seem to be sought after, although we're talking about the first book that appear in Italy from this author.
Misteries of collecting!
